Included assumptions & rule versions
  • One successful FDM item using filament priced per 1 kg spool; manual time and weight inputs.
  • Material, electricity, wear and setup repeat in full on independent failed attempts; finishing and fulfillment happen once.
  • Machine hourly rate covers wear and upkeep excluding electricity; labor charges only the entered active minutes.
  • Target margin uses item price plus charged shipping as revenue; the editable generic fee rate applies to that revenue.
  • Defaults are editable examples rather than recommended costs. Production handoff excludes packaging, postage and other fulfillment costs.

Sources checked October 27, 2026. Your overridden rates remain your assumptions.

One successful FDM item, one material. No slicer files, resin, multi-color purge or batch optimization. Suggested price uses generic editable selling fees; the Etsy handoff recomputes Etsy-specific rules. Cost calculation does not establish Etsy listing eligibility or design rights.

Limitations and unsupported situations (2)
  • Suggested pricing uses a generic fee model. Etsy tax-dependent processing fees, ad caps and other platform-specific rules require recalculation in the Etsy tool.
  • Failed attempts are modeled at full entered print and setup cost; early failures, batch sharing, resin, multi-material purge and design or licensing costs need separate assumptions.

Understand your numbers

One successful FDM item, one material. No slicer files, resin, multi-color purge or batch optimization. Suggested price uses generic editable selling fees; the Etsy handoff recomputes Etsy-specific rules. Cost calculation does not establish Etsy listing eligibility or design rights.

Expected production cost = repeatable material, machine, power and setup costs ÷ (1 − failure probability), plus finishing once. Packaging and postage are added once.

A worked example

The failed-print allowance assumes independent attempts with the same probability and full repeatable costs. Real partial failures may differ. Your machine and labor assumptions should reflect your own workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Does printer time count as labor?

Hands-on setup/finishing is labor. Unattended printing is machine and electricity cost. Keep them separate to avoid counting your time twice.

Why divide by the successful-attempt probability?

A 10% failed-attempt probability implies more than a flat 10% addition when repeats can also fail. This expected-value model states what is repeated.

Can I sell every licensed print on Etsy?

Do not assume so. Check Etsy’s current Creativity Standards and your design rights separately.
