Dimensional Weight Calculator

Compare actual and dimensional weight under an explicit carrier profile. This estimates billable weight, not a shipping price.

Included assumptions & rule versions
  • FedEx U.S. domestic package; carrier rules verified 2026-10-27.
  • Convert physical measurements to inches and pounds first using 1 in = 2.54 cm and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; round each side up to a whole inch, minimum 1 in.
  • Length is the longest side. Raw DIM uses the carrier-rounded box volume; DIM and actual weight then round up to whole pounds before comparison.
  • Divisor 139 in³/lb is normalized independently of display units. Metric results convert the U.S. pound result to kg; no separate cm³/kg carrier tariff is used.
  • Oversize and service-limit parcels are excluded from official profiles; package shape, material and service selection can create further handling charges.

Selected US package profiles only; current guide/account agreement governs. Service exceptions, contract divisors, oversize and unsupported packages require separate review. Handling thresholds may change the minimum weight; see result warnings. No rates, surcharges or delivery quote.

Limitations and unsupported situations (2)
  • Supported scope: one ordinary rectangular corrugated customer box on a U.S. domestic package service. International/export, freight, envelopes or carrier packaging, FedEx One Rate, UPS Simple Rate / Ground Saver, negotiated contract rules and multi-piece shipments are unsupported.
  • Estimated billable weight is not a shipping price. Fuel, residential, demand, packaging and other service charges require a carrier quote.

Convert measurements to the rule’s units, apply its measurement rounding, divide volume by the divisor, round dimensional and scale weights, then apply the supported profile’s billable-weight rule.

A worked example

A 16 × 12 × 8 inch, 4 lb box under the 139 profile has 1,536 cubic inches ÷ 139 ≈ 11.05 lb raw DIM; rounding up yields 12 lb. The larger billable basis is 12 lb.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smaller billable weight guarantee cheaper postage?

No. Rates also depend on zones, service, contract and surcharges. Compare actual quotes before choosing packaging.

Why can my carrier label differ?

Measured dimensions, profile, contract, handling rules or an unsupported service may differ. Check the applicable current guide and account agreement.
